Rapa Nui (Easter Island) is the southeastern-most island in Polynesia. The moai were created by the Rapanui people from 1100-1680 CE, almost all them from solidified volcanic ash. Rapa Nui is now part of Chile, which is 3,500 km to the east. Its nearest inhabited neighbor is Pitcairn Island, 2,000 km to the west.
