Potala Palace

The Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, was chief residence of the Dalai Lama until the 14th Dalai Lama fled from Tibet to India in 1959. Today it is a museum. Construction of Potala Palace began in 1645 and lasted until 1694. It has over 1,000 rooms, over 10,000 shrines and over 200,000 statues.

Tibet came under the control of the Communist Party of China in 1951.
